Our first product design is finished and is going into production now. The iTree is a high quality iPhone, iPod Docking station made out of tree trunk. The trunk is hollowed out with a special technique and specialized tools. The trunk is measured out to produce the best sound quality possible. All the products and the handcrafts are produced and done in the “Steirische Vulkanland”. We wanted to keep the iTree as regional as possible – we strongly belief that a good design is based on experience, is personal, has a “Heimat” and should be as less design as possible.

We as a human being are frail and indecisive. Above all, we doubt whether we are or we are not. This doll is equally frail. It doesn’t even bear its own arms anymore. Its indecision cannot be shielded from its inner core for any longer. It understands that it is and that it is not. No hiding, especially not in a hall of mirrors. It cannot betray itself or deny its own existence. We do, however, repeatedly so. To look into a mirror to watch ourselves is in itself an act that signifies our doubts. About our frailty and indecision, about whether we are or we are not. This emotionally intended act – call it mirroring, if you will – thus helps us overcome the implication of falseness. In us and our reflected selves. Helps us to accept these reflections as part of our own being – an extension. And yet, by surrounding this doll with mirrors, its existence becomes a lie due to the unintentional act of mirroring. It cannot accept or overcome. It only is and is not, knowingly so.

It’s a continuous piece of work, and I’ll be working and extending it for a long time, however, at some point I want to show it to you, so it might as well be now.

This is a website I have made with Daniel Fairbairn and Steven Barritt, an excellent php-programmer.

The Artbook is the publisher of the so called ArtBook. Every year this book is being sent out to publishers over the world, representing some of the best in illustration. It’s a catalogue full of illustrators. If you’re a commissioner, you pick up the artbook to browse for an appropriate style.

We’re trying to create an equivalently useful, or even more useful website for the art book here:

the elevator project

The Elevator Project took place in the Elevator going down to the Bolhao Metro Station in Porto, Portugal. Based on the geography of the city, the ride with the elevator is a quite long one and most of the time a really crowded one. The idea was to create a different atmosphere by putting colored foil over the existing lamps – to dip the cabin into another color. By the time you leave the cabin again and enter the white space of the underground-station your perception of colors has changed.

imagine a late sunday night. you lying in bed – tired and exhausted, but you can’t sleep. somehow you feel lonely a bit. not enough to put you in a depressive state of mind, but rather a kind of depressive feeling that generates your creative senses.

now to my last night’s experience:

i imagined that someone i wished to be at my side lies down beside me. the imaginative person that could be you (who by now should already have read what i’ve written to/for you) kissed me on the cheek and a sudden urge to capture that moment’s atmosphere came floating toward me. it was as if i’d been kissed by my personal muse and the outcome was as follows, entitled ‘you and i – together’:

wrestling like a pack of young lions

we could lie down exhausted

with our backs being shone on by

the red sun of the night

watching the star-lid sky

we could fall asleep together and awake to bright daylight

amusing ourselves with self-portraits of past times

giggling side by side, seeing each other’s smiles

our feet touch and every movement stops

frozen in a suspicious position

eye to eye, toe to toe

your gaze – a second expanded infinitely

my heart – bumping monotonously

I hope this goes on forever

you and I – together

and what follows now is a short explanation of how i’ve put those lines together:

imagine me lying on my red bedspread (i.e. my back being confronted by a mass of red -> line 4!), covered in walt disney’s lion king beddings, which on one side display simba the lion king with his father and on the other side an array of blue stars on white background (lines 1 and 5, by means the superficial you and me would lie beneath the star-sprankled blanket!). not being able to fall asleep i somewhere feel that constant longing for someone beside me. then imagine me gazing at my own self-portrait on the other side of the room, 120cm by 120cm from years way back (see line 7!) and the slow formation of a poem in my mind.

so, in conclusion, you now know that i have a longing for someone. but it’s not just like that, this longing generated a wonderfully poetic description of a scene that most likely could happen in my own room. you therefore additionally now know that marlon is sleeping on a red bedspread at times, and these days covers himself with beddings of disney’s lion king. but still, that’s not everything. i also have a huge self-portrait tugged to one of my walls and i’m probably a hopeless romantic… however i certainly was doped, too.

i’d love to read similar entries of other people’s longings here. maybe this could help as a starter… flowery phrases (i.e. “floskeln” in german) of course need to be added in order to round one’s own lines off with the right portion of romanticism.

Er brach in seiner Mitte ab, zerbröckelte in Buchstaben, verlor sich zwischen ihren Fingern und wenngleich auch alles, nein, nichts klar war, so wollte ich in diesem Augenblick ein ganzes Buch darreichen. Von der Wucht so vieler Sätze getroffen sah ich sie nie wieder.

Mein erster Versuch zartes Oberflächen-Licht nur im Photoshop zu erzeugen. Renderzeit ca 1 Minute. Den häßlichen harten Schatten bekomme ich beim nächsten Mal besser hin. Wenn gewünscht könnte man auch ein Tutorial “schnelles pimpen von einfachen Autocad oder Sketchup Bildern”. Das kann einem für den Anfang echt jede Menge Zeit sparen glaube ich …

Der LuaTileArranger meldet sich mit v.0.4 zurück und hat einige neuerungen im Gepäck. Zum Einen ist er durch einen neuen Code und der übertaktung der PSP auf 333 Mhz über 300% schneller geworden, zum Anderen beinhaltet das Programm jetzt einen voll funktionsfähigen Filebrowser.

Für alle die den LuaTileArranger noch nicht kennen: Das Programm dient zum erstellen von Maps für verschiedenste Spiele und Anwendungen direkt auf der Sony PSP. Die Maps können mit nahezu jeder Programmiersprache ausgelesen werden.

Das Programm läuft jetzt flüssig.

Komplett überarbeitete Grafiken.

Neuer Filebrowser, man kann nun den ganzen Memorystick durchforsten.

Lua scrips können ausgeführt werden.

Textreader hinzugefügt; Jetzt kann man die Readme dort lesen wo man sie braucht, nämlich im Programm während der Arbeit. Außerdem kann er *.html, *.php, *.asp, *.aspx, *.ini, *.cpp, *.hpp, *.cxx, *.hxx, *.c, *.h, *.java, *.js, *.vb, *.vbs, *.asm, und *.bat files öffnen.

Maps können nun auch als *.png abgespeichert werden.

Jetzt ist es noch einfacher die *.map dateien in andere Lua-Projekte zu importieren, ein übersichtliches Beispielscript ist im Download enthalten, nähers findet man in der Readme.

Das Programm ist nun selbsterklärend, man findet sich noch schneller zurecht

LuaTileArranger (kurz: LuTA) ist ein Programm um Maps für Spiele oder Programme direkt auf der PSP zu erstellen und zu verwalten. Dem geneigten Benutzer stehen dabei drei Ebenen zur verfügung, welche er mit selbstgemachten oder geklauten PNG Sprites frei gestallten kann. Die Oberfläche ähnelt bewusst der von Photoshop, sie ist übersichtlich und leicht verständlich.

Im Download enthalten sind Sprites von Boulder Dash, Dyna Blaster und Zelda.

Leider ist der Code total konfus, wodurch die Geschwindigkeit sehr leidet. Vielleicht kommen noch zukünfige Versionen, obwohl es im Momment eher schlecht ausschaut. Wenn jemand lust hat das Prog weiterzuentwickeln, oder einfach nur Ordnung in das Codechaos zu bringen ist er herzlich eingeladen!

Der Download kommt mit einer ausführlichen PDF, die auf jeden Fall gelesen werden sollte!

eine Zusammenarbeit zwischen Matthias Jäger und Michael Langeder.

Raum 0-1 ist eine Rauminstallation, die kontinuierlich zwischen abstrakter Grafik, projiziertem Bild und einer Mischform dessen hin und her pendelt. Mittels Videoprojektionen und computergesteuerten Lichtänderungen im Raum wird so ein neues, bewegtes Bild im Ausstellungsraum erzeugt. Scheinbar starre Grafiken an den Wänden erwachen dadurch zum Leben, werden um Inhalte ergänzt und es entsteht eine Art abstrakte Lichtlandschaft. Im Herzen des Raumes ist eine Sitzlandschaft auf der BesucherInnen zum längeren Verweil eingeladen werden. Gleichzeitig nehmen mehrere hochauflösende Fotokameras jede Minute ein Bild der Situation auf und bilden damit die vielen verschiedenen Zustände der Installation – auf einen speziellen Moment fixiert – ab.
